《孤星淚》：光影背後的歷史及人性

歌劇「孤星淚 」（Les Miserables), 雨果（Victor Hugo) 原著又稱為「悲慘世界」。為了這部書，雨果前後構思了40年才完成。該書是雨果批判現實最有力的代表作，還被改編為歷史上最成功的音樂劇之一。最近又再次搬上螢幕，由荷里活當紅的Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Huge Jackman 主演，掀起熱潮。

1848年法國第二共和成立，雨果原本支持路易拿破崙當選總統，但是到了1851年，路易拿破崙卻擅自稱帝，建立七月王朝，此舉令雨果極為不滿，並挺身與之對抗，最後遭致流放。流亡期間，雨果更致力於「悲慘世界」這部鉅作，1861年終於完成並發表問世。直到1870年普法戰爭拿破崙戰敗被黜，成立「第三共和」，雨果才得以返國，受到法國民眾熱烈歡迎。

Les Miserables故事的背景正是七月王朝建立之後，原本尖銳的社會矛盾不但沒有能夠解決，反而更加明顯。共和黨人對王權易主而沒有更多的社會變革感到失望，要求實行共和制，建立人人生而自由平等的社會，很多懷著理想主義的青年學生也在此時進行著大大小小的秘密結社和沙龍。另一方面，當時的法國也面臨著嚴重的社會危機。貧富懸殊加劇，巴黎流民階層倍增。

社會的不公不義，造就了無數如男主角Valjean因偷了一片麵包而被判囚十九年的例子。人民犯罪，僅因為饑餓、因為未被公平處置。法律在當時只是維護舊有秩序及特權階級利益的堡壘。片中追捕Valjean的警官Javert（Russell Crowe) 是一個典型的「悲劇」人物，他的人生信仰很簡單，就是法律，他認為法律是神聖的，而維護法紀是他理所當然的天職；他的價值觀很平面，犯事擾亂社會的必為壞人，縱然天涯海角他也要將他們追捕歸案。對「壞人」仁慈是不可取的，他們也是不值得信任的。Javert的人生過得理所當然，理直氣壯。他不關心Valjean為什麼要偷麵包，他無視Fantine如何淪落成妓女，為何要打傷嫖客，他只專注於社會上有人犯事了，他便依法秉公辦理。直至Javert數次的仁義之舉並拯救他於革命黨，Javert的世界觀開始動搖，目擊革命黨人被槍殺，甚至連少年人亦難幸免，Javert憐憫之心油然而起。最後，Javert放走了Valjean，作為執法者，他背離職守了，也同時背離了自己做人的宗旨，他整個理所當然的世界觀瞬間崩潰。Javert接受不了自己的瀆職，他選擇了自殺。Javert至死也不明白他心中產生的矛盾，也正正是社會不公義所帶出的矛盾，社會制度的崩壞、特權階級的殘酷統治才是窮人犯罪作亂的根本原因。所以我說Javert其實是一個悲劇人物，他生活在一個盲點中而不自知。

對於革命的人潮，在書中，雨果借男主角之口說：「最高的法律是良心」。

事實上，共產主義的思潮直接產生於法國大革命，「自由」、「平等」、「博愛」的觀念啟發了社會主義的理想。致於共產主義如何變質、墮落成另一個特權階級，那是後話了。

我很喜歡歌劇中這一激動人心的歌曲，它簡直像是法國大革命的進行曲：
