那蒼藍色的一點

Photographs, which cannot themselves explain anything, are inexhaustible invitations to deduction, speculation, and fantasy.

那愈是不能自我解釋的相片愈是能引人入勝，挑起人們的聯想。

這張相片看似只是由漆黑的背景，數道白光和雜訊所組成。沒有主體，最基本的構圖其實也談不上，但卻引來了無盡的。

雖然看似沒有主體，但若果你仔細留意相中間偏右的位置，你會看見蒼藍色的一點。那不是你電腦瑩光幕的污麈，而是我們的地球。

這幅相其實是由無人外太陽系太空探測船航海家1號在離地球64億公里外回望拍下的一幅相片。

航海家1號原先的主要目標為探測木星與土星及其衛星與環。但有趣地，探測船在1980年經過土星及完成其主要任務後，船上的電池竟足夠讓儀器正常地運作，並繼續以高速飛離我們的太陽系。有見及此，NASA顧問Dr. Carl Sagan提議在探測船離開我們的太陽系前回頭為整個太陽系拍一張全家福。但這建議在1980提出後經過一連串的內部爭論後（例：太陽的強光可能會永久破壞航海家1號攝影機的感光器），在1989才被正式接納。

因為探測船與地球的距離，所以所有的控制都是time delayed的（地球的訊號需約5個半小時才能到達到探測船），而拍攝的指令、角度及曝光都需要預先計算好才能被傳遞到船上的攝影機。在1990年2月14日，探測船成功執行指令，並在同年5至6月期間將60幅相片傳回地球。航海家1號的攝影機亦在完成任務後被永久關掉，以便節約電力，因為當探測船在離開我們的太陽系及進入星際空間後，就將需要4萬年才能抵達下一個行星系，而途中亦應沒有任何重大星體需要被紀錄。

其實Carl Sagan在提出此一建議時曾明言這幅相片並沒有太大的科學價值，因為相機根本不夠像素拍出地球或任何其他星球的表徵，而地球在這相片中64萬像素中只佔了0.12像素。這連一像素也不足的一點又可以藴藏了什麼的意義呢？

1994年，Carl Sagan在Cornell University的一次分享中說到他認為此照片的意義在於：

We succeeded in taking that picture, and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there – on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

簡單來說，那一點就是人類的一切。由最強大的帝國到最微弱的小國，從最富有的商家到無家可歸的窮光蛋，我們最憎恨的敵人、我們最愛的親朋都存在於此0.12像素中。歷史上所有的悲劇、鬧劇、退步和進步都在此微塵般的舞台上演出。

從我們在這浩瀚宇宙的微小，Carl Sagan得出我們作為人類的ethical decision應是對大家有更多的慈愛及同理心。

To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.
To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

但偏偏相片就是沒有不言而喻的唯一「真相」，尤其是這幅充滿空白的相片，就算我們能認同那一點就是人類的一切，我們卻可以因為擁有不同信仰政治理念而從相片中得出不同的ethical decision。

無神論者可以高舉此幅相片為地球及人類在浩瀚的宇宙中並沒有獨特位置的「證據」。但宗教狂熱者亦可以同時以此圖「證明」人類在宇宙中獨一無二的神聖地位。樂觀者如Carl Sagan或視此相片為人類和諧相處的最佳舉證，但悲觀者卻可能只見到在這一片混沌中人類生命和存在的荒謬和徒勞無功。

但就正如文初所說，愈是不能不言而喻的相片，就愈多空間給大家猜估和幻想，那麼少的細節卻可以引來這麼多元的反應也正是此相片有趣的地方。

對我而言，此相片又代表了什麼呢？

我想，無論你相信什麼，都要緊記相中的那一點代表的己是我們所有的一切，沒有少但也沒有更多，我們有無限的可能性但卻也只得一次機會。
