黑熊養殖業當然殘忍，我們要反。但是豬牛雞等的養殖業不殘忍嗎？有說人類需要吃肉，人類天性雜食，加上弱肉強食乃大自然定律，我們必須遵守。所以，反黑熊養殖是對的，但主張素食就是「極端動物保護主義」了。但作者認爲奉行素食主義，只是貫徹反虐待反殘忍的主流價值，並不極端，並就吃肉的「必要性」和「合理性」作出反駁。
